HUMAN CAPITAL is a raw drama about getting older in the middle of this unfolding American tragedy—and refusing to give up despite the sorrow of the album’s opening words: “A few final questions and thoughts / on the democracy we lost.”

It’s also about depression, marriage, gender expectations, drugs, and memory. Story-songs, mostly. Musically the album maps out the Venn diagram where River-era Springsteen, Archers of Loaf, “Maidenhead”-style Protomartyr, and a touch of Echo and the Bunnymen overlap: delay, distortion, and, God forbid, the occasional pop melody.

Built on friendships more than two decades old, Blind Engineer is a trio of pack mules/Columbus music scene veterans in their late forties who keep writing and playing music despite all wisdom to the contrary…plus a twenty-something dude who still has a modicum of enthusiasm for this misbegotten world through which we all plod. If Samuel Beckett were reincarnated as a leftist garage mechanic, this is what his band would sound like.
